Backebergia
Family. Cactaceae.
Origin. Mexico.
Description. Backebergia is a tree-like branched cactus with slender vertical stems with a diameter of 12 - 15 cm, having from 9 to 11 ribs; gray needle-like spines with black tips. The most interesting feature of this plant is that a very fluffy golden-brown cap, called the cephalium, develops at the top of the stem. It grows very quickly - every year it adds about 1 m of growth, while a narrowing appears on the stem caused by alternating phases of growth and rest. In young plants, the spines are lighter and more dense, due to the smaller diameter of the trunk and the absence of side shoots. In mature and old plants, the trunk widens at the base. The areoles are small with 2 - 4 central spines about 1 cm long and 10 thinner radial spines. The flowers are solitary, white-green, large - about 7 cm long and 4 cm in diameter.

Purpose
Due to its large size and rapid growth, this cactus is better suited for greenhouse maintenance.
Flowering time
Flowering occurs in spring.
Air humidity
It tolerates the dry air of heated rooms well and does not require spraying.
